Abstract

Introduction: Obesity, classified as a chronic condition of multiple origins, has increased significantly in recent years, and bariatric surgery has emerged as an effective therapeutic strategy for the most severe cases, although it commonly results in excess skin and abdominal flaccidity. In view of this, post-bariatric abdominoplasty is an important surgical alternative whose indication and possible complications must be carefully analyzed to ensure safe procedures with good outcomes. Objective: To analyze and synthesize the scientific literature from the last 10 years on post-bariatric abdominoplasty, focusing on the criteria for surgical indication and the main associated complications. Methodology: This literature review analyzed studies on post-bariatric abdominoplasty, focusing on indication criteria and complications, with articles from the last 10 years (2015-2025) searched in the PubMed database using descriptors such as "abdominoplasty", "post-bariatric" and "risks and complications". Articles in Portuguese and English that addressed post-surgical complications were included, using combinations of descriptors such as “abdominoplasty” OR “abdominoplasties” AND “post” AND ‘bariatric’ OR “bariatrics” in English and Portuguese and manual analysis to select relevant studies. Of the 10 articles evaluated, 4 were selected for a qualitative analysis, synthesizing the main findings on the risks and impacts of this combined surgery. Conclusion: Analysis of the studies reveals that the majority of patients undergoing bariatric surgery experience significant health benefits, including cardiovascular improvement, metabolic control and remission of comorbidities, leading to the indication of abdominoplasty for body contouring. Despite being a generally safe intervention, post-bariatric abdominoplasty involves risks, so careful selection of candidates and post-operative monitoring are essential. In addition, adequate nutritional and psychological support is crucial to ensure successful recovery, reduce complications and improve patients' quality of life.
