Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by difficulties in social interaction, communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior patterns. Nursing plays an essential role in the care of individuals with ASD, contributing to health promotion, prevention of complications, and support for family members and caregivers. This study aims to identify, through a systematic review, the best nursing practices and interventions in the care of patients with ASD, analyzing the literature published between 2010 and 2025. The methodology adopted follows the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA), with searches carried out in the PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, LILACS, and SciELO databases. The quality of the articles was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Tool, Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool, and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The theoretical framework discusses the definitions of ASD, its classification in the DSM-5, and the degrees of the disorder, which range from mild to severe, directly impacting the support needed for each individual. The evolution of the concept of autism throughout the editions of the DSM is also addressed, highlighting the importance of standardizing diagnostic criteria to better target care interventions. The results of the systematic review indicate that nursing care is essential for improving communication, social adaptation, and quality of life of patients with ASD. The discussion of the findings highlights the importance of interdisciplinary nursing work and the need for public policies aimed at training professionals to provide specialized care for ASD. In addition, the relevance of support for caregivers is highlighted, since family involvement is a determining factor for the success of interventions. The study concludes that nursing plays a crucial role in the management of ASD and that evidence-based strategies should be widely implemented to ensure inclusive and efficient care.
