Abstract
The aim of this study is to understand, based on current scientific literature, the profile of victims of traumatic brain injury and the factors related to this condition. This research is configured as an integrative literature review, based on the PICo strategy, using the descriptors: complications; risk factor and craniocerebral trauma. The search for articles took place in the LILACS, MEDLINE, BDENF, IBECS and CUMED databases, via the VHL, filtering the time frame from 2018 to 2023, primary articles, available in full, in Portuguese, English or Spanish. By applying the descriptors to the databases, a total of 851 articles were obtained. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 101 articles were obtained for prior reading, of which 23 were read in full, 13 were excluded, and the final sample was 10 articles. Thus, it was observed that among the main victims of traumatic brain injury, the male population represented the highest prevalence, in the reproductive age range of 30 to 50 years, sometimes associated with falls from their own height and traffic accidents. In this scenario, it was possible to see that intracranial hemorrhages emerged as the main aggravating factors of this injury, capable of causing temporary or permanent sequelae. Another point highlighted was the implications of TBI for the mental health of its victims, as well as the neurodegenerative complications associated with it. It emerged that TBI is one of the main injuries identified in urgent and emergency care services, capable of perpetuating chains of repercussions on victims' physical and mental health, as well as corroborating the need for prolonged hospitalization in some cases and the need for intensive hospital care to promote, recover and rehabilitate health.
