Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, characterized by skin barrier dysfunction and immune dysregulation. Recent evidence suggests that vitamin D plays a role in the modulation of the immune response and the integrity of the skin barrier, which can impact the severity of AD. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of vitamin D supplementation in patients with atopic dermatitis, through an integrative literature review. The research was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases, using the descriptors "Vitamin D", "Atopic Dermatitis" and "Supplementation" in Portuguese and English. 18 studies were initially identified, of which 12 were included after the application of the eligibility criteria. The results indicate that vitamin D supplementation may be associated with a reduction in the severity of AD symptoms, improvement in the function of the skin barrier and modulation of the inflammatory response. However, the heterogeneity of the studies, variations in the doses administered and the absence of robust long-term clinical trials limit the generalization of the findings. It is concluded that vitamin D supplementation may be an auxiliary therapeutic resource for the management of atopic dermatitis, but additional studies are needed to establish its effectiveness and define appropriate clinical protocols.
