Abstract

Introduction: Loss of smell (anosmia) is a common sequela in post-COVID-19 patients. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is a technique that uses low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to stimulate cellular regeneration, offering a safe and non-invasive alternative for treating these disorders. Methodology: This study is an integrative review conducted with articles selected between 2020 and 2024. The research was carried out in the PubMed, Scielo, and Google Scholar databases using descriptors such as "COVID-19," "olfaction," and "laser therapy," among others. The inclusion criteria were articles addressing post-COVID-19 olfactory loss, published in the last five years in Portuguese or English. Excluded were duplicate articles, editorials, abstracts, and academic theses. Discussion: COVID-19 has caused significant olfactory disorders, such as anosmia, which is a common sequela. LLLT has shown positive results in regenerating damaged olfactory nerves, reducing inflammation, and promoting sensory function recovery through ATP production. Although it is an effective and safe alternative, further studies are needed to optimize laser parameters and therapeutic protocols. Combining LLLT with other therapies may accelerate recovery. Considerations: PBMT is a promising method for treating post-COVID-19 olfactory loss, regenerating nerves, and reducing inflammation. Although the results are positive, further studies are necessary to establish ideal treatment criteria and confirm its efficacy. This technique has proven to be a valuable and non-invasive alternative, especially in the post-pandemic context, for patients with persistent olfactory dysfunctions.
