Abstract

Introduction: Pulmonary embolism is a serious condition characterized by obstruction of pulmonary arteries, usually by blood clots. In women, the risk of developing this condition is increased. In this scenario, the increase in the use of electronic cigarettes in the country has become a concern, as its relationship with the development of the disease has been increasingly highlighted. Objective: To define the epidemiological profile of pulmonary embolism in women in Brazil in the context of increased use of electronic cigarettes. Methods: This is a retrospective horizontal epidemiological profile that uses data from Datassus, using the temporality parameters in relation to the use of electronic cigarettes in the years 2015 to 2024. Result: In 2022, Brazil recorded more than 18 thousand cases of pulmonary embolism in women, with an increase compared to 2017. In the same period, the use of electronic cigarettes among young people aged 15 to 24 grew 300% between 2015 and 2019, indicating a possible correlation. Discussion: Data analysis revealed a relationship between the increase in electronic cigarette use among young people and the increase in hospitalizations for pulmonary embolism in women. The age group that had the greatest relative increase over the analyzed period was 15 to 29 years old, highlighting the impact of electronic cigarettes on the incidence of the disease. Conclusion: The study highlights the relationship between the increase in pulmonary embolism and the use of electronic cigarettes, especially among young women aged 15 to 29, and seeks to encourage future public policies.
