Abstract

This article discusses the relationship between obesity and menstrual dysfunction in adolescents, emphasizing the need for an interdisciplinary approach to diagnosis and treatment. Obesity, a chronic health problem with increasing prevalence, affects the endocrine and gynecological system, resulting in menstrual irregularities, anovulatory cycles, hyperandrogenism, and infertility. The pathophysiology involves metabolic, hormonal, and genetic factors, including increased leptin and insulin production, insulin resistance, and reduced SHBG levels. Diagnosis involves clinical evaluation, laboratory and anthropometric tests, while treatment includes lifestyle modifications, drug therapy, and, in severe cases, bariatric surgery. Prevention, through nutritional education, promotion of physical activity, and public policies, is essential to combat obesity and its consequences on the reproductive health of adolescents.
