Abstract
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient for the functioning of the human body, playing a key role in bone metabolism regulation, calcium and phosphorus absorption, and immune system modulation. Found in two forms, ergocalciferol (D2) and colecalciferol (D3), vitamin D is obtained through sun exposure, diet, and, in cases of deficiency, through supplementation. Despite its importance, vitamin D deficiency is a global issue, affecting various population groups, especially the elderly, pregnant women, and patients with chronic diseases. This article addresses the benefits of vitamin D for bone and immune health, as well as the risks associated with excessive supplementation, such as hypercalcemia and toxicity. Additionally, natural sources of vitamin D, indications for supplementation, and the importance of medical supervision to ensure adequate levels and avoid complications are discussed. It is concluded that vitamin D is crucial for health, but its use must be balanced and individualized, based on scientific evidence and professional guidance.
