Abstract
The admission of a newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is an event that generates a great emotional impact on parents, and can compromise the establishment of an emotional bond. Early and continuous contact between parents and baby is essential for the emotional and physiological development of the newborn, in addition to contributing to the reduction of parental stress. In view of this, this study aims to analyze the importance of the bond between parents and newborns admitted to the NICU, highlighting the benefits of this contact for both and the strategies that can be adopted by the health team to strengthen this relationship. The results indicate that the promotion of the parental bond in the NICU is associated with benefits such as the physiological stabilization of the baby, improved weight gain and recovery time, in addition to reduced levels of anxiety and depression in parents. The kangaroo method, for example, is one of the main strategies used to strengthen this relationship, allowing skin-to-skin contact and encouraging the active participation of parents in the care of the newborn. The presence of parents in the NICU, combined with the psychological and informational support offered by the nursing team, favors the construction of a humanized and welcoming environment, reducing the feeling of helplessness and fear that can accompany this experience. The discussion points out that, despite the proven benefits of early bonding, there are still barriers that hinder its implementation, such as restrictive hospital rules, lack of training of professionals to deal with the emotional demands of parents, and overload of the health team. The humanization of neonatal care is essential to ensure that parents feel included in the baby's recovery process, strengthening the family bond and promoting the well-being of all involved. It is concluded that the bond between parents and newborns in the NICU is essential for the child's development and for the emotional balance of the parents. The health team has a fundamental role in this process and should adopt practices that favor family closeness and guarantee humanized care. Strengthening this bond not only improves clinical outcomes for newborns, but also contributes to a less traumatic hospital experience for the family, reinforcing the importance of policies that encourage active parental participation in neonatal care.
