Abstract

Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) is an acute, diffuse inflammatory condition that causes lung injury and can be triggered by various etiologies. ARDS should be suspected in patients with progressive dyspnea, increasing oxygen requirements, and alveolar infiltrates on chest imaging, occurring within 6 to 72 hours after a triggering event. Due to hypoxemia, these patients require specific ventilatory strategies, such as protective ventilation and prone positioning, which have been shown to significantly reduce short-term mortality. In this context, the ELMO helmet emerges as a non-invasive ventilation technology, demonstrating efficacy in improving oxygenation and reducing the need for orotracheal intubation. This study aims to review and analyze the use of the ELMO helmet in the treatment of ARDS, emphasizing its implications and challenges in the clinical setting. For this purpose, 15 articles were selected from the PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases. By addressing these issues, this study contributes to the advancement of clinical knowledge and the improvement of ARDS management strategies.
