Abstract

Long-acting contraception (LACT) plays a fundamental role in promoting sexual and reproductive health, offering effective and highly adherent methods for preventing unwanted pregnancy. Intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants are some of the most recommended options, as they have a high rate of efficacy and require little or no ongoing action on the part of the user. The objective of this study is to analyze the impact of LACT on sexual and reproductive health, considering its benefits, challenges and implications for women's autonomy and well-being. The literature review shows that the use of long-acting reversible contraceptive methods contributes to reducing the rates of unplanned pregnancies, improves the quality of life of users and reduces costs for health systems. Studies indicate that LACT may also be associated with non-contraceptive benefits, such as the reduction of intense menstrual symptoms and protection against certain gynecological conditions. However, challenges such as restricted access to methods, lack of adequate information and sociocultural barriers still hinder the widespread adoption of these contraceptives. Furthermore, some studies point to concerns regarding possible side effects and the need for ongoing professional monitoring to ensure informed choices by users. It is concluded that long-acting contraception has a significant impact on promoting sexual and reproductive health, providing greater autonomy and contraceptive safety for women. To ensure its effectiveness and acceptance, it is essential to invest in health education strategies, expand the availability of these methods in public and private services, and promote adequate training for health professionals. In this way, LTC can contribute to reducing the rates of unplanned pregnancies and improving reproductive health indicators in various populations.
