Abstract

In Brazil, arboviruses are a cause of public health concern, with clinical, economic and social impacts; their control represents a major challenge. The main arboviruses that affect not only Maranhão, but Brazil, are Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya, all three have the same transmission vector (Aedes Aegypti), and a similar clinical picture, making it difficult to differentiate them. For a favorable outcome of these diseases, early diagnosis and treatment are essential. The objective of this work is to understand the epidemiological profile of the arboviruses Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya in Maranhão, comparing the findings between the diseases. This is a cross-sectional observational study, with a quantitative approach. Data were collected from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). The data showed that in Maranhão, between 2019 and 2022, 17,006 cases of Dengue, 4,978 of Chikungunya and 2,081 of Zika Virus were reported. The cure rate for Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika was 69.86%, 72.96% and 72.13%, respectively. Arboviruses caused 30 deaths, 80% of which were due to Dengue. For diagnosis, the clinical-epidemiological criterion was the most used in Dengue (50.39%), and the laboratory criterion in Chikungunya (40.68%) and Zika (59.44%). The information mentioned above shows that the years with the highest notification were 2019 and 2022, probably due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which demanded greater attention from the health service and kept the population isolated at home. Furthermore, we showed that arboviruses mostly evolve with cure, with the highest mortality in Dengue.
