Abstract

Introduction: Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium primarily located in the pyloric region of the stomach and can induce chronic infections in this organ. Infection with H. pylori does not preclude the individual from being infected by other pathogens, and co-infection scenarios are common. The aim of this study was to review the literature on co-infection by H. pylori and other pathogens. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted through articles published in the last five years (2019-2024), available in the databases PubMed, Google Scholar, and Periódicos Capes. Results: A total of 55 studies were selected, addressing co-infection by H. pylori and viruses (49.1%), protozoa (18.2%), parasites (18.2%), bacteria (12.7%), and fungi (1.8%), with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) being the most frequently cited etiological agent (29.1%). Conclusion: Co-infections involving H. pylori and other pathogenic agents are facilitated by the presence of similar risk factors, such as low socioeconomic conditions, poor hygiene, and inadequate sanitation. Understanding these co-infections aids in the screening of diseases when one pathology is diagnosed, thereby reducing the likelihood of the establishment of the other pathogenic agent.
