Abstract

Introduction: Premature rupture of the fetal membrane (RPMF) is an obstetric emergency that consists of the rupture of the amniotic sac before the onset of labor. Objective: To describe the maternal risk factors associated with premature rupture of the fetal membrane during pregnancy. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review based on materials indexed in the Virtual Health Library Portal (VHL): Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Índice Bibliográfico Español en Ciencias de la Salud (IBECS) and Literatura Latinoamericana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde (LILACS), using the Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCS) crossed with the Boolean operator AND, as follows: Premature rupture of fetal membranes AND Risk factors AND Pregnancy AND Female. Inclusion criteria: primary and original studies, published in full text between January 2019 and November 2024, in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish, related exclusively to the subject of the study. Exclusion criteria: articles of the literature review type, theses, dissertations, monographs, case studies and publications that did not contain the full text available in the research sources free of charge, after applying the eligibility criteria, 13 studies were selected to make up this review. Results and Discussion: Several maternal factors were found to be related to an increased risk of premature rupture of the fetal membrane, including biological, environmental and social factors. In addition, the combination of multiple risk factors, such as metabolic dysfunctions, alterations in the microbiota, autoimmune conditions, pollution and periodontal health were associated with an increased risk of premature rupture of the membrane. Final considerations: Therefore, multiple maternal factors were associated with the risk of premature rupture of the fetal membrane, making it necessary to implement prevention strategies and monitor pregnancy during prenatal care, especially in women with higher risk factors.
