Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the repercussions of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) on oral and maxillofacial tissues, with emphasis on the temporomandibular joint. Literature review: This is a literature review that was carried out in June and July 2024, the question that guided the search was “What is the impact of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome on temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD)?”. From this, a search was carried out in the PubMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine) and VHL (Virtual Health Library) databases, with a time span of 10 years. The search strategy was formulated by combining the descriptors indexed in DeCS/MeSH “Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome”, “Joint Hypermobility” and “Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome”, combined with the Boolean operator “AND”. The selection criteria were: studies published in the last 10 years, which were related to the guiding question, with full text available in Portuguese, English and Spanish, systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses, integrative literature reviews, case reports and retrospective studies. The initial search resulted in the identification of 24 articles. Of these, 06 articles were included in the research. Conclusion: Patients with EDS have a greater risk of developing TMD and joint hypermobility, presenting typical symptoms of joint changes, which can contribute to the diagnosis of this complex condition. However, more studies are needed, since there are no treatment protocols for these patients, who present greater systemic risks.
