Abstract

Due to chronic noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), polypharmacy in the elderly, which is characterized by the use of multiple medications, is very common and can lead to adverse effects and drug interactions. Primary health care is essential to mitigate these risks, review treatments, prevent problems and improve the quality of life of older adults. This article aims to discuss the importance of primary care in relation to mitigating the adverse effects of polypharmacy in the elderly. The study was carried out through a search in the Medline/PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Cochrane Library databases. The research question and strategy used were based on the PICO model. Clinical trials, meta-analyses, randomized controlled trials, full articles, books and documents published in English, Spanish and Portuguese in the last 5 years were included. A total of 251 articles were initially found. After analysis and elimination of duplicates, 134 references were analyzed by title and abstract, of which 76 were included for full reading. After this stage, 64 references were excluded. In the end, 12 studies were considered eligible. Available evidence shows that polypharmacy in the elderly is a growing challenge that requires careful attention, especially in primary health care. Continuous monitoring and regular review of medications are essential to minimize the risks of adverse effects and drug interactions, ensuring healthier aging and a better quality of life for the elderly.
