Abstract
Objective: To identify the contributions of the Human Milk Bank (HMB) to maintaining breastfeeding in preterm newborns (PTNBs), from the mothers' perspective. Methods: This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, based on Bardin's content analysis. The research was conducted in a public maternity hospital located in a city in Pernambuco, accredited as a Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (IHAC). This maternity hospital, a reference in the region, has its own HMB called BIAMA. Nine mothers of hospitalized PTNBs who used the HMB services and agreed to sign the Free and Informed Consent Form (FICF) participated in the study. The research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under Opinion No. 033283/2021 and CAAE 45353321.5.0000.5201. Results: Based on the analysis of the participants' statements, three main categories emerged: guidance on human milk and lactation management; use of pasteurized donor milk; and social support. These categories are detailed throughout the article. Conclusions: Maintaining breastfeeding in preterm newborns is a significant challenge for both mothers and health professionals involved in care. The HMB plays an essential role in providing guidance, conducting massage and breast pumping to stimulate milk production, and meeting the demands of hospitalized preterm newborns. In addition, the processing and donation of human milk are fundamental elements in supporting and encouraging breastfeeding.
