Abstract

The influence of social media and internet exposure on suicidal behavior is a vast and complex field of research. The negative implications of excessive and irresponsible exposure are clear, but there is an equally significant potential for mental health promotion and suicide prevention through creative approaches adapted to the virtual environment. This is a study whose overall aim was to analyze the impact of social media and internet exposure on suicidal behavior, exploring both negative influences and potential opportunities for intervention. To this end, a systematic literature review was carried out using the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) and the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) databases. Analyzing the results of this study, it was concluded that the influence of social media and exposure to the internet on suicidal behavior is complex. Although the negative aspects, such as exposure to harmful content, can contribute to suicidal ideation, social media also offer opportunities for prevention and intervention by increasing the visibility of the problem and providing preventative information. A multidisciplinary approach is highlighted as essential, with health professionals and educators alert to signs of suicidal behavior on social media, while the importance of public policies and interdisciplinary actions is highlighted to promote mental health and create safe online environments.
