Abstract

The journey to recovery from substance addiction requires a carefully tailored approach, where pharmacological interventions, combined with behavioral therapies and social support, are the pillars for building a sustained and meaningful recovery. The purpose of this research was to study pharmacological interventions currently available for the treatment of substance dependence. With this goal in mind, a systematic literature review was conducted, selecting scientific research published between 2019 and 2024, found in the Scopus, Semantic Scholar, Scielo, Medline and Lilacs databases. After examining the results, the main conclusion of this study is the importance of restoring neurochemical balance as a fundamental approach in the treatment of substance addiction. Although pharmacological interventions offer significant benefits, it is essential to address challenges such as side effects and long-term adherence in order to improve their effectiveness. It also highlights the continued need for research to better understand the comparative effectiveness of different pharmacological interventions and to develop more comprehensive strategies to address the challenges associated with treating addiction.
