Abstract

ABSTRACT

Gummy Smile (GS) is a clinical condition characterized by more than 3 mm of gingival exposure when smiling and is often considered a common aesthetic problem in the population. The etiology of GS includes altered passive eruption of teeth, dentoalveolar extrusion, vertical maxillary excess, short or hyperactive upper lip muscles, or a combination of these factors. Several therapeutic modalities have been proposed to correct this condition. The use of botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) is considered an innovative treatment option that is more conservative, faster and safer than surgical interventions. Therefore, it can serve as a therapeutic alternative to surgical approaches in certain cases. The aim of this study is to report two clinical cases of gingival smile correction using BTX-A applied to the upper lip elevator muscles. A dose of 4 international units (IU) was administered bilaterally and patients were reassessed after 15 days. The results of this study suggest that gum smile correction with BTX-A is both effective and safe.
