Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic represented an unprecedented global challenge, impacting all aspects of human life, especially the mental health of healthcare professionals. These workers, who faced long hours, work overload and constant risk of infection, also dealt with the pain and suffering of their patients, often without adequate psychological support. This context generated a significant increase in disorders such as anxiety, depression and burnout among doctors, nurses and other health professionals. Objective: This article seeks to analyze the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of these workers, highlighting the main risk factors, the psychological consequences and the strategies necessary to promote appropriate emotional care for this essential category in facing health crises. Methodology: The research was conducted through online access to the databases Documentation on Health Sciences in Latin America and the Caribbean (LILACS), Health Sciences Information Center in Latin America and the Caribbean (Bireme), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SCIELO) and Virtual Health Library (VHL) during the month of August 2024. Results and Discussion: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a significant increase in mental health problems among healthcare professionals, such as anxiety, depression, burnout and post-traumatic stress. Work overload, constant exposure to the risk of infection, scarcity of resources and the emotional pressure of dealing with the pain and loss of patients were the main risk factors identified. Although some professionals have adopted coping strategies, such as peer support and moments of rest, the lack of adequate psychological support in health institutions has worsened these problems. The absence of structured policies for caring for workers' mental health revealed the urgent need for changes, highlighting the importance of continuous support programs and the creation of an institutional culture that prioritizes the emotional well-being of these professionals. Final Considerations:  The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of healthcare professionals, exposing weaknesses in psychological support and generating a significant increase in disorders such as anxiety, depression and burnout. The emotional overload and stigma surrounding seeking help highlight the urgent need to implement specific mental health policies for these workers. The experience during the crisis reinforces the importance of continuous and structured support, to guarantee not only the well-being of professionals, but also the effectiveness of the health system in future emergencies. The mental health of healthcare professionals must be a priority so that they can continue with their mission of providing care with dignity and safety.
