Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate mineral deficiency and associations with anthropometric, clinical and lifestyle factors in different techniques.

Methods: This is a retrospective documentary study, carried out in electronic medical records, with data from individuals after 2 years of bariatric surgery (BC), by band techniques gastric(BG) and gastric bypass (RYGB), at the São João Hospital Centre, city of Porto – Portugal.Sex, age, serum concentrations of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and iron were evaluated, iron, in addition to adherence to a new lifestyle. In statistics, Pearson's Chi-square or Fisher's Exact tests were used, with a significance level of 5% (p< 0.05).Results:286 individuals over 20 years of age were evaluated, with a predominance of females (90.9%) in both surgical techniques, with BG being the most frequent (68.9%). Mineral deficiency at 2 years of age was high (90.6%), mainly in the RYGB technique, with emphasis on magnesium (32.2%) and iron (15.7%), in adult women. While phosphorus and potassium presented insignificant deficiencies. In the BG technique, deficiency of magnesium (11.5%) and iron (14%) occurred.Disabilities were not associated with BMI or the presence of comorbidities. Conclusion:mineral deficiency was high after 2 years of CB, especially magnesium and iron in women; there was high adherence to physical activity, guided diet and use of multivitamins.
