Abstract

Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is an uncommon but often aggressive form of skin cancer due to its significant morbidity and high mortality rates. Although it accounts for less than 5% of all skin cancers, the majority of skin cancer-related deaths are from melanoma. To describe the profile of cutaneous melanoma cases in individuals over 50 years of age in the state of Alagoas, Brazil, between the years 2018 to 2022. This is a cross-sectional study of a descriptive nature. Data from cases of malignant melanoma of the skin, collected at the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System, in the Oncology Panel, covering the period from 2013 to 2019 were used. The variables were gender, age group, treatment modality and staging. For systematization and data analysis, Microsoft Office Excel software was used. In the analyzed period, 19,612 confirmed cases of malignant melanoma of the skin were registered in Brazil. When analyzing the hospitalizations within the study period, according to the diagnosis regions, it is seen that the South Region had the highest incidence with 7,954 cases. Malignant skin melanoma represents a large number of cases in the Oncology Panel, most worryingly in men between 60 and 69 years old. Thus, knowledge of the epidemiological profile of those affected by CM in Brazil can serve as a tool for planning and allocating resources in health planning, ensuring access and quality of care. Likewise, greater attention is needed in the prevention and reporting of new cases.
