Abstract
The aim of this study was to outline the profile of hospitalizations due to obesity in the Northeast region, from 2017 to 2021. This is an observational, descriptive and quantitative study. The data refer to the period from January 2017 to 2023, collected from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) of the Department of Information Technology of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) focused on patients hospitalized for obesity. The research sample includes individuals classified by age group, sex and type of care, who were hospitalized due to obesity. A total of 5,691 hospitalizations were observed between the years 2017 to 2023 in the Northeast region of the country, with 2023 presenting a higher rate with 1,181 hospitalized patients. In the age group, the prevalence is higher in individuals aged 30 to 39 years, with a number of 2,033, females with 4,892 hospitalizations and with a prevalence of emergency nature. Therefore, it is understood that obesity is a complex condition with multiple causes, such as nutritional, genetic and psychosocial factors, which is linked to diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. Its prevalence has increased, especially in 2023, increasing hospitalizations and impacting life expectancy. In addition to the health effects, obesity generates serious social and economic implications, with increased costs as complications develop. Therefore, it is essential that managers implement preventive measures and interventions to treat this condition.
