Influence of Oral Health On The Quality of Life of The Elderly: Na Integrative Review

Abstract

Introduction: This study seeks to understand the impact of factors on the quality of life related to the oral health of the elderly, highlighting information such as making clinical decisions, evaluating services and treatment plans for a better quality of life. Objectives: The objective is to explore scientific evidence on the main oral manifestations associated with elderly patients and how oral health conditions can influence the quality of life of the elderly population. Methodology: The review was conducted through an integrative analysis of the literature, using the PubMed, VHL, SciELO databases. We selected 7 studies published between 2019 and 2024 that investigate the relationship between oral health conditions and the quality of life of the elderly population. Results and discussion: The studies reviewed highlight that aging causes gradual and irreversible changes in the oral cavity, increasing vulnerability to trauma and infections. In addition, edentulous patients with diabetes mellitus are at greater risk of developing opportunistic candida infections under their dentures. However, the general prevalence of periodontitis in the elderly is high, resulting in the destruction of the structures that support the teeth, leading to loosening and tooth loss. Conclusion: The review highlights an increase in chronic diseases that end up affecting the quality of life of the elderly, presenting a high incidence of oral problems. Therefore, health services aimed at this age group are of great importance, ensuring better oral health conditions.
