ABSTRACT
Introduction: Brazil has almost 700,000 registered cases of AIDS, the majority among men. However, this difference has been decreasing over the years. Objective: To characterize the distribution of AIDS cases in the male population in Amazonas. Methodology: This is a survey of secondary information available on official websites of the Ministry of Health (SINAN/NET). Result: It is estimated that, currently, one million people live with HIV in Brazil. Of this total, 650,000 are male. According to the epidemiological bulletin, HIV/AIDS 2023, Brazil reported, between 2018 and 2023, 236,970 cases of HIV infection in both sexes. In the same period, Amazonas reported 29,972 cases (12.6% of the total number of cases reported in Brazil), while Manaus reported 9,247 cases (equivalent to 30.9% of all cases in Amazonas). The other municipalities in the state reported 20,725 cases of HIV infection (equivalent to 69.1%) of all cases in the state. Conclusion: Since men are the main group affected by the infection, public policies are needed to provide educational, prophylactic and curative care to this specific population.
