Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy is a phase that brings about various transformations in a woman's life. During this period, dental prenatal care is of utmost importance, as the numerous physiological changes make women more susceptible to various oral conditions, such as periodontal disease, cavities, salivary changes, among others.

OBJECTIVE: To discuss pregnant women’s knowledge regarding the importance of dental prenatal care.METHODOLOGY: This study is based on an integrative literature review using the databases: PUBMED, SCIELO, and BVS, following specific inclusion and exclusion criteria for article selection.RESULTS: A total of 624 articles were identified in the databases. After reading the titles and abstracts, 21 articles remained: 0 from PUBMED, 12 from SCIELO, and 10 from BVS. After a full-text review and applying the eligibility criteria, 8 articles were discarded for not meeting the study's objectives. As a result, 13 studies were included in this review.DISCUSSION: The discussion surrounding the importance of dental prenatal care has become increasingly common and necessary, as it is crucial for the health of both the mother and the baby. However, a recurring issue that affects the pursuit of dental prenatal care is the presence of taboos and myths.CONCLUSION: It is concluded that dental prenatal care is extremely important for maternal and child health. Therefore, it is essential for the multidisciplinary team to work in an integrated manner to develop strategies that reach as many pregnant women as possible, ensuring they understand the significance of this program and debunking the taboos and myths surrounding it.
