Abstract
Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is an idiopathic condition characterized by acute heart failure in late pregnancy or postpartum. Risk factors include race, ethnicity, multiparity, and advanced maternal age. Patients present with heart failure due to reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF <45%), with ventricular and biatrial dilation and impaired systolic and diastolic function, in addition to increased pulmonary pressure. This study performed a literature review with 30 articles selected from databases such as Google Scholar, BVS, Scielo, and PubMed. The reviewed studies included different methodologies, such as cohorts and randomized clinical trials. The results showed a series of complications associated with PPCM, such as stroke and severe cardiac dysfunction, justifying the high mortality rates observed. Early identification and appropriate management are essential to improve the prognosis of these patients.
