Abstract
Introduction: Cancer is characterized by abnormal cell manifestations that lead to the deterioration of healthy tissues and is currently one of the most prevalent diseases worldwide. Oncological therapy primarily consists of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which can cause side effects and changes in the oral cavity. Objective: To evaluate oral manifestations in oncology patients resulting from chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review analyzing 30 scientific articles published from 2014 to 2024 in the following databases: PubMedUS, National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, SciELO, and the National Cancer Institute (INCA) website, employing descriptors such as: integrative oncology, malignant neoplasm, mucositis, head and neck neoplasms, and osteoradionecrosis. Results: Existing cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, can cause serious side effects and some sequelae in the oral cavity, including xerostomia, dysgeusia, mucositis, candidiasis, radiation caries, and osteonecrosis (ORN and ONM), affecting patients' quality of life. Conclusion: Radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments result in oral manifestations that negatively influence individuals' quality of life; therefore, the involvement of dentists in the multidisciplinary cancer treatment team is essential for positively impacting patients' quality of life.
