Abstract

Gingival recession (GR) refers to the exposure of the root surface due to displacement of the gingival margin towards the apex of the cementoenamel junction, generally without the presence of inflammation and affecting the buccal surface. This condition can be caused by several factors, including traumatic brushing, poor dental positioning, periodontal diseases and other elements such as occlusal trauma and orthodontic movement. This study reviewed recent literature on the connective graft donor area, analyzing articles from the PubMed databases and Scopus, covering the period from July 2012 to December 2023. The focus was on connective tissue grafting, which proved to be an effective approach, with high predictability of aesthetic and functional success in Miller class I and II defects. The subepithelial graft technique, in particular, showed positive results due to the excellent nutrition that the technique provides to the graft. Additionally, the study noted that the use of relaxing incisions can compromise blood supply, prolonging healing time and affecting final results. When analyzing the data, it was concluded that connective tissue grafts not only promote clinical gains in the insertion and increase of keratinized tissue, but are also effective in root coverage in cases of gingival recession. Therefore, connective tissue graft stands out as a viable and effective alternative among surgical techniques for treating gingival recession, offering significant clinical results and improving patients' aesthetics and periodontal function. This approach is increasingly recommended in current clinical practice.
