Abstract
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is defined as the loss of 1,000 ml or more of blood within 24 hours after birth, and is one of the main causes of maternal death and morbidity globally. This study, an integrative literature review, analyzed 23 articles and sought to identify the main therapeutic measures for PPH. The results show that, in the initial stages, interventions are predominantly pharmacological, especially with the use of oxytocin and tranexamic acid. If bleeding persists, non-surgical measures are recommended, such as bimanual uterine massage, intrauterine tamponade balloon (IUS) and/or vacuum aspiration system and, in case of failure, surgical treatment should be adopted. Massive transfusion may be necessary in critical situations. For prevention, the prophylactic use of oxytocin is recommended, as well as the training of health professionals and the preparation of health institutions. The assessment of risk factors and the implementation of appropriate measures are essential to avoid unfavorable maternal outcomes.
