Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has posed numerous challenges to global public health, particularly with the increase in cardiovascular complications such as pulmonary embolism (PE). This study aims to analyze the underreporting of PE-related deaths during the pandemic in the state of Paraná, Brazil. Data on PE diagnoses and death records from 2018 to 2023 were collected through the TabNet portal and the Department of Health Analysis and Surveillance of Noncommunicable Diseases (DAENT), part of DATASUS. The results show that in 2020, 762 PE diagnoses and 271 PE-related deaths were recorded, numbers that contrast with subsequent years, which showed an average increase of 28% in deaths. This finding highlights significant underreporting during the peak of the pandemic. The study suggests that healthcare system overload and inconsistent diagnostic criteria contributed to this underreporting, emphasizing the need for improvements in epidemiological surveillance and standardized diagnostics to reduce unreported cases and enhance public health policies.
