Abstract
The aim of this study was to present, based on a literature review, the mechanisms underlying infertility in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), as well as to identify possible treatments available. PCOS is recognized as the most common endocrine disorder of reproductive age, affecting up to 10% of women, presenting hormonal, reproductive and metabolic alterations. Therefore, at least two criteria are necessary for its diagnosis: oligoovulation or anovulation, clinical and/or biological hyperandrogenism and polycystic ovaries identified on ultrasound. Depending on the clinical evaluation of each patient, therapeutic options include first-line changes in lifestyle, for example, physical activity and healthy eating, in addition to pharmacological therapy, hormone use, fertilization and surgery. However, there are still concerns about some side effects of treatment, such as the risk of multiple pregnancies, which indicates the need for further studies to improve the prognosis of these women.
