Abstract

Bariatric surgery is a significant surgical procedure for the treatment of obesity. Unfortunately, this intervention is associated with a high risk of postoperative complications, particularly related to anesthesia. This literature review aims to evaluate the effectiveness of total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) compared to traditional inhalation anesthesia in obese patients, who are at high risk of anesthetic complications due to comorbidities such as obstructive sleep apnea, hypertension, and other cardiovascular diseases. TIVA, which can be defined as a continuous intravenous administration of anesthetics, has shown greater efficacy in terms of hemodynamic control, lower incidence of nausea and vomiting, and earlier recovery. This article will review available data on the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing these anesthetic techniques during weight reduction surgery.
