Abstract
Introduction: Breast cancer has a higher incidence in women over 40 years of age and
accounts for around 25% of new cases of cancer each year, with variations in different
regions of the world, being considered the main cause of female deaths. Women with
mastectomies tend to have an altered perception of body image and low self-esteem,
resulting from the physical and psychological implications of the surgery. This research
explores the impacts of the self- image of mastectomized women on their recovery.
Objective: To analyze the scientific literature regarding the self- image of women
undergoing radical mastectomy. Methodology: The PICO strategy was used, based on
mastectomized patients who had multidisciplinary support in redefining their self-image.
The research used Web of Science, PubMed, Virtual Health Library (VHL), Scientific
Electronic Library Online (SciELO Brasil), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in
Health Sciences (LILACS) to build the database. The database query was carried out
using the keywords: breast cancer AND self-image OR body image AND mastectomy OR
mastectomized women. Results: It is expected that the reframing of self-image
addressed by the medical team and psychologists, during the peri- and post- operative
period, will contribute positively to the recovery of patients after the radical mastectomy
procedure. Conclusion: Radical mastectomy can have a significant impact on women's
self-image, leading to challenges such as low self-esteem, difficulties with acceptance
and changes in female identity.
