Abstract
This review article explores the impact of depression on the progression of dementias in geriatric patients, with an emphasis on the interactions between these two conditions that significantly affect the mental health and quality of life of the elderly. Depression, a common comorbidity in individuals with dementia, is associated with an acceleration of cognitive and functional decline, especially in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Through a critical analysis of the scientific literature from the past 10 years, this study investigates the underlying neurobiological mechanisms, including alterations in cortisol levels and reduced neuroplasticity, as well as the influence of genetic factors such as the APOE-ε4 allele. Additionally, the bidirectionality of the relationship between depression and dementia is discussed, where depression can act both as a risk factor and as a consequence of cognitive decline. The review also addresses the variability in treatment response in patients with concomitant depression and dementia, suggesting the need for combined and personalized therapeutic approaches. Finally, the article highlights the importance of considering socioeconomic and cultural factors in managing these conditions, proposing that early and comprehensive interventions can slow the progression of dementia and improve the quality of life of geriatric patients. This study contributes to understanding the complex interaction between depression and dementia, reinforcing the need for further clinical research and innovative therapeutic strategies.
