Abstract

Odontogenic lesions originate from epithelial tissues related to the development of the odontogenic apparatus or from remnants of cells trapped during organogenesis. It can affect different regions, tissues of the oral cavity and important anatomical structures that include the maxillae and mandible. Odontogenic cysts are pathological lesions that form in the oral cavity and may contain liquid, semi-fluid or gas. Therefore, this literature review aims to present advances in the diagnosis and management of benign cystic and tumoral lesions of the jaw. Odontogenic cysts are classified as developmental, inflammatory and non-odontogenic cysts, are generally asymptomatic and grow slowly. They can cause displacement of surrounding structures, expansion, malocclusion and facial asymmetry. Odontogenic tumors can be benign or malignant in origin, resulting from the multiplication of cells. Diagnosis and treatment of cystic lesions are important because these lesions can cause complications such as bone deformation, tooth loss and develop into tumors. Thus, the diagnosis of cystic lesions in the jaw can be obtained through orthopantomography, computed tomography and cone beam computed tomography examinations. Among the most recommended treatments for cystic lesions are decompression, marsupialization, enucleation and bone resection, or even a combination of all these treatments. However, each technique has its advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to integrate advanced technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of odontogenic lesions, aiming at the patient's well-being and recovery.
