Abstract
Objective: To identify the epidemiological profile of sepsis-related mortality in newborns across Brazilian territory and the impact on death outcomes based on the analysis of birth weight, newborn sex, type of labor, gestational age, maternal age, and maternal race. Method: This is a quantitative, comparative and observational epidemiological study with a cross-sectional, population-based design. The analyzed data were obtained from the Information Department of the Unified Health System. The data analyzed pertain to the period from 2012 to 2022, through the selection of variables: birth weight, sex, type of labor, gestational age, and maternal age and race. Results: The variables most related to deaths are: male sex, extremely low birth weight, mixed race, vaginal labor, extreme preterm pregnancies, and maternal age between 14 and 35 years. Conclusion: Newborns are a more vulnerable group to sepsis, and diagnosis in this population is complex. Among the variables related to the study objective, those that contrast offer a higher risk of death. Therefore, this research points to the indispensability of advancing prevention measures and early diagnosis of sepsis in newborns, aiming to reduce the number of deaths and their impacts on society.
