Abstract

Objective: The study aimed to review and synthesize current evidence on the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges of ectopic pregnancy (EP), focusing on rare cases and those related to assisted reproduction. Methodology:A narrative review was conducted through a simple search on PubMed, which resulted in 2,981 studies. Inclusion criteria, such as articles published in English and available in full text, were applied to select relevant studies. Results: Early diagnosis of EP, essential to prevent severe complications, primarily depends on transvaginal ultrasound and β-hCG levels. Recent advances include the exploration of salivary biomarkers as a complementary diagnostic tool. In treatment, while methotrexate is widely used, recent studies indicate that expectant management may be equally effective, particularly in patients with low and declining β-hCG, reducing the need for surgical interventions. Conclusions: The management of EP remains a significant clinical challenge, requiring accurate diagnosis and therapeutic approaches tailored to the patient's profile. Personalized treatment, based on robust evidence and new diagnostic tools, is crucial to improving clinical outcomes and minimizing associated risks.
