Abstract
Violence against women is a global phenomenon that persists as one of the most alarming forms of human rights violations. In the Brazilian context, this problem takes on worrying aspects, reflecting not only a social issue, but also a public health and justice challenge. During the period from 2013 to 2023, Brazil witnessed a series of events that brought to light the severity and persistence of this problem, highlighting the urgency in understanding its psychological impacts on victims. This study proposes a literature review with the aim of analyzing and synthesizing information about domestic violence and its psychological impact on victims, with an emphasis on different forms of violence and therapeutic responses. Focusing on clinical implications, victims' prognosis and long-term outcomes, the research is based on reliable sources, such as PubMed, Scielo and relevant clinical studies. The United Nations defines violence against women as "any act of gender-based violence that results or may result in physical, sexual or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether in public or private life." Violence against women has a range of profound psychological impacts that can affect their mental health and quality of life in significant ways. Psychological trauma resulting from violence can include post-traumatic stress symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares and extreme anxiety. Additionally, victims often experience a drop in self-esteem and self-confidence due to the abuse they suffered, which can affect their ability to relate to others and feel safe in their own environment. In the event of an assault or domestic violence, it is crucial to act quickly to ensure the victim's safety and seek appropriate help. If you are in immediate danger, seek a safe location, such as a neighbor's house, and call the police (dial 190) or emergency services (such as 180) for immediate assistance.
