ACUTE PANCREATITIS: PATHOPHYSIOLOGICAL AND DIAGNOSTIC MECHANISMS

Acute pancreatitis, an inflammatory disease that destroys peripancreatic tissues, is among the most common diseases in gastroenterological disorders, with gallstones and alcohol being the main etiologies. This review aims to explore data related to the pathophysiological and diagnostic mechanisms of acute pancreatitis, gathering and analyzing the most recent information on the subject. This study consists of a descriptive literature review, analyzing scientific works available on the platforms: PubMed, BVS, and SciELO. The research was conducted based on articles published between 2019 and 2024, in English or Portuguese, with full content access. The selection criteria involved complete and free articles in the databases, excluding articles that did not meet the aforementioned criteria. In total, 10 articles were included in the review. The keywords used were “acute pancreatitis,” “pathophysiology,” and “diagnosis” and their equivalents in Portuguese. This review highlights the understanding of the underlying mechanisms of acute pancreatitis, showing that besides timely treatment to reduce the risk of severe complications in AP, it is essential to verify the clinical outcomes and quality of life of affected patients.
