Abstract

Introduction: Diabetes is a chronic disease that causes hyperglycemia due to dysfunctions in the production or action of insulin, affecting millions globally and impacting patients' health and quality of life. Wound healing is especially challenging for diabetic patients and can lead to serious complications such as infections and amputations. Objectives: This study aims to review wound management in diabetic patients, exploring clinical and technological interventions to promote effective healing. Methods: An integrative literature review was carried out, with a systematic search in the SCIELO and VHL databases, selecting studies published between 2014 and 2024 that addressed "Diabetes Mellitus", "Wound Treatment" and "Diabetic Patients". Results and discussion: Diabetic patients face challenges such as poor circulation due to diabetic microangiopathy and compromised immune response, making healing difficult. Strict blood glucose control is crucial, as is the use of bioactive dressings and other advanced technologies that promote tissue regeneration. A multidisciplinary approach, involving different health professionals, is essential for integrated and personalized treatment. Conclusion: Ongoing patient education about self-care is essential to improving clinical outcomes and quality of life, highlighting the need for continued collaboration between researchers, healthcare professionals and communities to address these challenges.
