Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Osteoarthritis, a chronic degenerative condition of the joints, represents a growing challenge in public health, especially among the elderly, due to the deterioration of cartilage and joint inflammation. This study analyzes hospital admissions, associated costs and demographic characteristics of patients with osteoarthritis in Brazil, aiming to inform health policies to mitigate its impact on the elderly population. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to analyze hospital admissions for osteoarthritis in elderly people in Brazil from January 2021 to April 2024, with an emphasis on distribution by age group, patient sex, types of care and hospital costs. METHODOLOGY: This is a quantitative retrospective study using data from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), accessed via the TABNET/DATASUS secondary database. Hospitalizations, age group, patient sex, types of care and hospital costs due to osteoarthritis in the elderly in Brazil between January 2021 and April 2024 were analyzed. The analysis used descriptive statistics and tabulation in a Microsoft Excel 2016 spreadsheet, with presentation of the results in tables in Microsoft Word 10. RESULTS: Data analysis indicates that the Southeast region led the number of hospitalizations for osteoarthritis in the elderly in Brazil, representing 55.67% of the total, with hospital costs corresponding to 54.46%. The most affected age groups were 60 to 69 years old, followed by 70 to 79 years old and 80 years old and over. Hospitalizations were predominantly female (60.62%) and mostly classified as elective (86.97%). CONCLUSION: The data highlight the urgency of public health policies to effectively manage osteoarthritis in the elderly, especially in Southeast Brazil, with a high incidence of hospitalizations and high costs. Priority measures in prevention, early diagnosis and treatment are essential to mitigate the impact of osteoarthritis on public health and the quality of life of the elderly.
