Abstract
Depressive syndromes, such as major and minor depression, are more common in cancer patients than in the general population. This article reviews the prevalence, assessment, and management of unipolar depressive disorders in these patients, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach that considers the psychological and physical aspects of cancer. The review was conducted between March and June 2024, using databases like PubMed and Medline, resulting in the analysis of 10 relevant articles. The findings indicate that depression in cancer patients is associated with poorer quality of life, lower treatment adherence, and unfavorable clinical prognosis. Depression is particularly prevalent among breast cancer patients and the elderly, requiring individualized treatment strategies that include antidepressants and psychosocial therapies. Early identification and appropriate management of depression are crucial to improving oncological outcomes and the quality of life for these patients.
