Abstract
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neuropsychiatric disorder that, although commonly diagnosed in childhood, often persists into adulthood, significantly impacting the quality of life and daily functioning of affected individuals. This narrative review examines current approaches in managing ADHD in adults, focusing on pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions. The global prevalence of adult ADHD is estimated at 2.6%, with variations depending on a country's resource level. Diagnosing ADHD in adults is challenging due to symptom overlap with other psychiatric disorders, necessitating thorough evaluations. Management includes medications such as stimulants and non-stimulants, alongside non-pharmacological therapies like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Studies indicate that adults with ADHD have an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, highlighting the need for careful management of these patients. The review concludes that a multimodal and individualized approach is essential to improve clinical outcomes and quality of life for adults with ADHD, emphasizing the importance of prevention, early identification, and effective interventions.
