Abstract

The objective of this article is to study stress in parents and caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and identify tools that can be used to reduce emotional stress and promote mental health. This is a scientific literature review drawn from scientific literature published between 2017 and 2024 on parental stress in caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder. To identify the articles, we searched the Periódico LILAS, PUBMED and Google Scholar databases to identify articles related to the topic of emotional state of parents of children with ASD. The results showed that the severity of ASD symptoms was the main cause of parental stress. Overthinking is the biggest stress mothers face. Due to the increase in stress, family stress, which directly affects quality of life, it is necessary to establish a network of psychological support for the family and guidance. Furthermore, social networks should be encouraged, as they are known to be important determinants of well-being in the face of stress. Several articles have demonstrated the importance of parent training programs as they provide appropriate behavior modification techniques in family situations to improve the self-efficacy of parents and caregivers
