Abstract
This article aims to scan the current medical literature on sleep disorders, especially insomnia. Integrative review in the BVS, LILACS, SciELO, PubMed database of works published between 2019 and 2023, combining the descriptors "sleep disorders", "insomnia" and "diagnosis" with the Boolean descriptor "AND". Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder. It is defined as dissatisfaction with the quality or quantity of sleep, which occurs despite adequate opportunity to sleep and which imposes some type of harm on the individual during the day. The prevalence of chronic insomnia in industrialized societies is 5 to 10%. It is concluded that sleep disorders, notably insomnia, emerge as a formidable enigma for the collective health and well-being of affected individuals.
