Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the influence of surface treatment on biaxial flexural strength and surface changes using SEM. Methods: 54 ceramic disks of leucite-reinforced feldspathic CAD/CAM blocks (IPS Empress Cad Cerec, Ivoclar Vivadent) were used. The discs were divided into three groups (n=18) according to the surface treatment: hydrofluoric acid 5% 20s and silane (HF20); hydrofluoric acid 5% 60s and silane (HF60) and self-etching ceramic primer (P). The samples were cemented to an epoxy resin disk with dual resin cement, and subjected to mechanical fatigue (1.2 x 106 cycles, 50N, 3.8 Hz) and a biaxial flexural test (1 mm/min; 1,000 Kgf). Results: For HF20, the result was statistically superior to HF60 (p < 0.001); P was similar to the others. The Weibull indicated that the treatment with the highest reliability was P. The microscopies obtained in the HF groups showed increased dissolution of the vitreous matrix and exposure of the other contents. The P group showed greater surface homogeneity. Conclusion: The type of surface treatment affects the strength of leucite-reinforced ceramics when different etching times are used.
