Abstract

Social media are digital platforms that facilitate interaction and information sharing among users through the creation and dissemination of content. In this context, in recent years, they have emerged as valuable and versatile tools in the field of medical education. Among the various advantages offered are access to real-time updated information, participation in global academic discussions, the exchange of research and innovative practices, and the promotion of more interactive and personalized education. This promising scenario points to a future where medical education becomes more dynamic, accessible, and interconnected. Given this, this study aims to investigate the intellectual structure of the literature on the use of digital media in medical education. The bibliometric method was chosen for this purpose. The temporal delimitation covered the period from 2004 to 2024. Data collection was carried out between April and May 2024, and searches were conducted in the databases of the U.S. National Library of Medicine/PUBMED, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde and Portal de Periódicos da Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior. The final sample consisted of 31 manuscripts. The results showed that most articles originated from the United States, with BMC Medical Education being the journal with the highest number of publications. The year with the highest prevalence was 2020, with most articles being in English and using a qualitative approach. Additionally, the number of authors ranged from 4 to 6. Furthermore, the central theme of most studies focused on the use of social media as supportive tools in the educational process of medical students. Ultimately, it is hoped that this work can significantly contribute to the field of medical education by paving the way for new research on the use of social media as a teaching and learning tool, thereby increasing interest and visibility in the topic.
