Abstract
The anterior open bite is one of the malocclusions with the greatest aesthetic and functional impairment, in addition to dental and skeletal changes, and can be defined as a deficiency in the normal vertical contact between the incisal edges of the upper and lower anterior teeth, whose etiology is multifactorial, being often linked to an orofacial myofunctional disorder, either by genetic factors or by the prolonged action of deleterious oral habits. On the other hand, deleterious habits are called because they establish a neuromuscular imbalance as they can act as deforming factors for bone growth and development, dental positions, respiratory function and speech, being, therefore, an important etiological factor of malocclusions. Knowledge of etiological factors is fundamental for the diagnosis and treatment of anterior open bite so that it can act objectively, eliminating predisposing factors with appropriate treatment, thus allowing normal facial growth and development. This study aimed to review the literature on anterior open bite and the cause/effect relationship of deleterious oral habits such as pacifiers and digital suction, selecting scientific articles relevant to the topic, clarifying the etiological relationship between anterior open bite and deleterious oral habits.
